Many people successfully keep British Shorthairs together with dogs. The breed's calm and confident temperament makes them better suited to multi-pet homes than many other cat breeds.

Choosing the Right Dog

Not every dog is a good match. British Shorthairs do best with dogs that have a calm or medium energy level. High-prey-drive breeds (such as many terriers or sighthounds) can be risky.

The best combinations are usually with:

  • Golden Retrievers
  • Labradors
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
  • Older, well-trained dogs of any breed

Puppies and young dogs often need more supervision because of their high energy.

Introduction Process

Never just put a new dog and cat together and hope for the best. Proper introduction takes time.

Start by keeping them in separate rooms for several days so they can smell each other through the door. Swap bedding so they get used to each other's scent.

Next, allow short supervised visual meetings through a baby gate or carrier. Watch body language closely.

Only allow full interaction when both animals are calm. Keep the first meetings very short and positive.

Living Together Successfully

Most British Shorthairs will establish their own space and routines. They often become tolerant or even friendly with the dog over time.

Provide plenty of vertical space (cat trees, shelves) so the cat can escape if needed. This is especially important during the adjustment period.

Feed them in separate areas to avoid resource guarding.

Never leave a young or high-energy dog unsupervised with a kitten.

What to Watch For

Signs of stress in the cat:

  • Hiding more than usual
  • Reduced appetite
  • Over-grooming or hair loss
  • Aggression toward the dog

If problems persist after several weeks, consult a professional behaviorist.

Once established, many British Shorthair + dog households live in peaceful coexistence for years. Some even become genuine friends and play together.

The key is choosing the right dog, introducing them slowly, and respecting the cat's need for safe space.
